MELOMAKARONA
INGREDIENTS
• 1 kilo extra virgin olive oil
• 3 teacups sugar
• 3 tsp cinnamon
• 3 tsp nutmeg
• 2 tbsp honey
• 1 kilo crashed walnuts
• 1 tsp soda
• 1 sachet baking powder
• 1 glass freshly squeezed orange juice
FOR THE SYRUP
• 1 kilo honey
• 1 kilo sugar
• 2 glasses water
PREPARATION
We put the oil in a pot and boil it for 10’ minutes at a low temperature. We cut a lemon in half and let it boil with the oil. We let the oil cool off and throw in the sugar, stirring in order for it to dissolve completely. We add the honey and the rest of the ingredients except for the walnuts of which we only add I cup. We mix it very well and when it is smooth we take small amounts of the dough, shape them any way we want and place them on a roasting pan. We bake them at 170 C in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes until golden brown. We prepare the syrup in another pot. We put the sugar and the water in the pot, we boil, and when it is dissolved we add the honey. We let it thicken a bit. We pour the syrup on the melomakarona (either the melomakarona or the syrup has to be hot) place them on a big platter and decorate them with crashed walnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg.
